Blue Hen Weekend: Basketball teams at BCC

1:45 p.m., Jan. 12, 2007--Weekend action on campus at the University of Delaware includes men's basketball and swimming and diving on Saturday and women's basketball on Sunday.

The UD men's basketball team will play a Colonial Athletic Association contest against the College of William & Mary at 7 p.m., Saturday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The undermanned Fightin' Blue Hens are 2-14 overall and 0-5 in the conference. The Hens feature one of the CAA's top scorers in junior forward Herb Courtney, who is averaging 17.9 points per game.

William & Mary enters the game 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the conference, having had a seven-game winning streak snapped earlier this week in an 88-77 loss to Virginia Commonwealth University.

The UD Alumni Association is offering shuttle bus service to all night games. The bus will begin pickups one hour before game time, with the first stop being at Perkins Student Center and subsequent stops, in order, at University Courtyard, School Lane Garden Apartments, Smith Overpass, Ray Street, Pencader, Christiana Towers, Rodney/Dickinson, Towne Court Apartments and South College Avenue, in front of the Delaware Field House.

Also Saturday, the Blue Hen swimming and diving teams will take on CAA rival James Madison University at 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building. The UD women's team is 10-2 in dual meets and the men's team is 5-5.

At noon Sunday, the UD women's basketball team will face Towson University in a CAA showdown. UD, which consistently has been earning votes in the national polls, is 13-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference following Thursday's 65-43 victory over Northeastern University. The Hens feature seniors Tyresa Smith, who is averaging 17.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, and Chrissy Fisher, who is averaging 14.4 points and 7.9 rebounds. Towson is 11-3 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

The game will be televised by Comcast SportsNet and to create an appropriate background of UD royal blue, there will be a T-shirt giveaway sponsored by CSX Transportation. A total of 1,000 shirts will be given away at this game. “We want the Bob Carpenter Center to look like a sea of royal blue,” Curt Krouse, athletics marketing director, said. “We have been encouraging fans to wear royal blue to all Blue Hen athletics events this year, and this is a great opportunity to show a live regional television audience the kind of spirit and excitement we have here at Delaware.”

Tickets can be purchased at the door the day of the game or in advance at the Bob Carpenter Center and Trabant Student Center box offices or by contacting TicketMaster at 302-984-2000 (www.ticketmaster.com).
