UD women’s basketball falls at James Madison

UD forward Courtney Irving had 14 points in the loss to James Madison.

8:27 a.m., Jan. 26, 2007--The James Madison University women's basketball team handed the University of Delaware its first conference loss of the season, topping the Fightin' Blue Hens 73-65 in a Colonial Athletic Association showdown played Thursday night in Harrisonburg, Va.

With the loss, the Hens fell to 16-3 overall and 7-1 in the CAA while James Madison improved to 16-2 overall and 8-0 atop the conference. UD committed 21 turnovers and shot just 35.5 percent from the field, falling behind 32-23 at halftime. Despite several second half rallies, the Hens were unable to overtake the Dukes.

“We just didn't play team basketball tonight,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “I believe in this basketball team and I know we can win a championship, but for some reason in big games this season we tend to have too many players trying to do their own thing. We started to go one on one too many times and had some poor shot selection. It's disappointing but there is a ton of time left. As poorly as we played tonight, it was only an eight-point game on the road against one of the best teams in the league.”

UD senior guard Tyresa Smith led the team with 17 points and 12 rebounds and junior forward Courtney Irving had 14 points and seven rebounds.

The Hens will return home for a game against George Mason University, which is 8-10 overall and 2-6 in the conference. The teams will meet at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. UD will then travel to Virginia Commonwealth University (10-8 overall, 3-5 in the CAA) for a game at 7 p.m., Thursday.
