UD women’s basketball rallies for win at Hofstra

UD senior guard Tyresa Smith scored 31 points as the Hens rallied to defeat Hofstra.

8:59 a.m., Jan. 22, 2007--University of Delaware senior guard Tyresa Smith scored a career-high 31 points to help the Fightin' Blue Hens overcome a 10-point deficit and defeat host Hofstra University 67-59 in a key Colonial Athletic Association game played Sunday afternoon before 3,040 fans in Hempstead, N.Y.

The Hens trailed 40-30 just two minutes into the second half before mounting a 10-0 run to even the game, and then took the lead for good when Smith completed a three-point play for a 53-51 advantage with 5:56 left in the game.

“We had an outstanding team effort in the second half,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “I thought when we switched to man-to-man defense in the second half that was the turning point of the game. We had the opportunity to play in front of a big crowd today and we handled it well. We stayed focused and kept our composure and that is a good sign for the future.”

In addition to Smith, guard Melissa Czorniewy had 13 points and forward Chrissy Fisher had 12.

With the victory, the Hens improved to 16-2 overall and 7-0 atop the CAA. Hofstra, which like UD has been receiving votes in national polls, fell to 14-4 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Two of those losses have been at the hands of the Hens.

UD faces another tough conference opponent at 7 p.m., Thursday, when the Hens take on James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. James Madison is 15-2 overall and, like UD, 7-0 in the CAA. The Dukes are coming off a 75-69 victory over the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

UD will return home to face George Mason University at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. George Mason is 7-10 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
