Battling Hens top Tribe in women’s basketball

Tyresa Smith scored 21 points to lead the Hens past William & Mary.

8:43 a.m., Jan. 19, 2007--Overcoming a 10-point deficit with 15:41 left to play, the scrappy University of Delaware women's basketball team battled back to defeat the College of William & Mary 68-55 in a hard-fought Colonial Athletic Association contest played Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

With the victory, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 15-2 overall and 6-0 atop the CAA. William & Mary fell to 11-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

For UD, the conference schedule does not get any easier with games at Hofstra University at 1 p.m., Sunday, and at James Madison University at 7 p.m., Thursday. Hofstra is 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference and James Madison is 14-2 overall and, like the Hens, 6-0 in CAA play.

UD will return home for a game against George Mason University at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28.

In Thursday's game, William & Mary jumped out to an early lead behind stellar three-point shooting. The Tribe sank five of 11 three-point baskets in the first half to take a 30-24 lead into the break.

William & Mary extended the lead to 40-30 early in the second half as Kyra Kaylor, the reigning CAA Player of the Year, hit a three-pointer to cap a 6-0 run.

At that point, UD's defensive pressure began taking its toll and the Hens took the lead for good at 46-45 on a steal and lay-up by point guard Alena Koshansky with 9:39 left to play.

Senior guard Tyresa Smith led the Hens with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Chrissy Fisher had 15 points and seven rebounds and junior guard Kyle DeHaven, a transfer from William & Mary, had 10 points. Courtney Irving added nine points and six rebounds and Melissa Czorniewy had eight points.
