8:23 a.m., Jan. 8, 2007--Strong defense and good ball movement helped lift the University of Delaware women's basketball team to a 66-38 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the host University of North Carolina Wilmington on Sunday afternoon.

“Over the years, we have had some major battles with this team (UNC Wilmington),” said UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “Last year we were out of sync in our game down here and they beat us. We didn't play well and did a lot of things poorly. I told our team today that this game was all about pride and that I wanted us to go out and show what kind of team we have. I wanted us to step on the floor and play good basketball and I thought we did that today. Our ball movement was good and in the second half we got on a roll. I really feel good about our effort. We stepped up and showed the way we are capable of playing.”

The Fightin' Blue Hens jumped out to a 31-19 halftime lead and never looked back, recording 22 steals and hitting on four of eight three-point shots.

Senior guard Tyresa Smith led the Hens with 19 points, senior point guard Alena Koshansky had 12 points and four steals and junior forward Courtney Irving had 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals. Guard Kyle DeHaven had six steals.

With the victory, the Hens improved to 12-2 overall and 3-0 atop the CAA. They will return home for three consecutive games at the Bob Carpenter Center, facing Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Thursday, Towson University at noon, Sunday, and the College of William & Mary at 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 18. The Towson game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet.

Northeastern is 2-12 overall and 1-2 in the conference, Towson is 10-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference and William & Mary is 10-4 overall and 2-1 in the conference.
