UD women’s basketball wins Hofstra showdown

Junior forward Courtney Irving scored a key basket to help lift the Hens past Hofstra.

8:34 a.m., Jan. 5, 2007--The University of Delaware women's basketball team sprinted to a 12-0 lead to open the game and held off Hofstra University to win 59-56 in an important Colonial Athletic Association contest played Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 11-2 overall and 2-0 in the CAA. Hofstra, which saw its 10-game winning streak snapped, fell to 11-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. Both teams have received votes in national polls this season.

Leading the Hens, senior guard Tyresa Smith had 19 points and eight rebounds, senior forward Chrissy Fisher had 19 points and six rebounds and junior forward Courtney Irving had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Irving put the Hens in front for good with a key lay-up with 1:25 left in the game, taking a pass from a driving Smith to make the score 57-56. Hofstra had a chance to regain the lead on a breakaway with 17 seconds left but Smith hurried back to defend and UD guard Kyle DeHaven slipped in to steal the ball. Hofstra was forced to foul and Fisher hit two free throws to extend the UD lead to 59-56, and a late Hofstra three-point attempt missed the mark.

UD will return to action with a CAA game at the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 2 p.m., Sunday. The Hens will return home to face Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Thursday. UNC Wilmington is 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the CAA, while Northeastern is 1-12 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
