UD women’s basketball prepares to host Hofstra

Tyresa Smith and the Hens will take on Hofstra in a key CAA women’s basketball game at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

8:53 a.m., Jan. 2, 2007--The 10-2 University of Delaware women's basketball team is preparing for a key Colonial Athletic Association showdown against 11-1 Hofstra University at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are coming off a 70-59 loss to No. 21 ranked Bowling Green State University while Hofstra is on a 10 game winning streak. In the loss the Bowling Green, the Hens jumped out to a 29-27 halftime lead but saw the Falcons come storming back in the second half. Senior forward Chrissy Fisher led the Hens with 19 points and 12 rebounds and senior guard Tyresa Smith had 16 points and 11 rebounds.

“We made some bad reads on the defensive side of the ball and it snowballed, leading to not scoring offensively,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “It was a playoff type atmosphere against a good basketball team so we have to learn from this and get better.”

Thursday's game against Hofstra could provide a preview of the CAA championship tournament playoffs, which will be held March 8-11 at UD.

Both teams have defeated nationally ranked opponents, with the Hens topping the University of Kentucky 86-70 and Hofstra downing Michigan State University 57-53, and both have received votes in national polls. In the most recent USA Today/ESPN coaches' poll, the Hens received eight votes and Hofstra three. In the Associated Press poll, Hofstra received 40 votes and UD two.

Smith, who is averaging 18.2 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, and Fisher, who is averaging 15.3 points and 8.3 rebounds, lead the Hens. Guard Alena Koshansky has 46 assists and Kyle DeHaven has 43 steals.

Four Hofstra players are averaging double figures in scoring. Senior center Vanessa Gidden is scoring 16 points and grabbing 8.1 rebounds per game, while senior guard Cigi McCollin is scoring 13.4 points per game, senior forward Lizanne Murphy 12.9 and senior forward Lana Harshaw 11.4.
