Student computer security video contest under way

3:36 p.m., Jan. 30, 2007--The second annual Computer Security Awareness Student Video Contest, conducted by the Educause/Internet2 and Network Security Task Force, in cooperation with the Research Channel, is seeking short, student-created videos focusing on campus computer security concerns. Deadline for submission is March 15.

The contest [www.udel.edu/security/contest.html] is sponsored by the National Cyber Security Alliance. Winning videos will be featured on the Educause/Internet2 Computer and Network Security Task Force web site at [http://www.educause.edu/security].

For more information on entry requirements, suggested topics, judging criteria, prizes and how to submit videos, visit [www.educause.edu/SecurityVideoContest2007]. Educause is a nonprofit association that promotes the intelligent use of technology.

Last year, a group of six UD freshmen won two honorable mention awards for the videos “Guide to Technology?" and “Phishing for Kenny.” The videos are available for download at [www.educause.edu/content.asp?page_id=7103&bhcp=1].

Information Technologies at UD works year around to prevent copyright infringement and reduce proliferation of computer viruses, while educating students about other web abuse issues on the campus.

To learn more about the University's computer policies, including how to protect and clean computers, UD network users can visit [www.udel.edu/security]. Individuals setting up new computers are required to activate firewall software, install current antivirus software, install security updates, use passwords for protection and remove spyware.

Students also are warned that failure to follow all steps to clean and protect computers could result in losing network access. There is a fee for those who require University assistance in computer cleanup.

UD's Code of the Web has made students aware of the consequences of negligent Internet use. The University also has acquired a license for McAffe antivirus software so that all students and employees can use the program free of charge.

Members of the computer community are invited to visit the National Cyber Security Alliance web site at [www.staysafeonline.info], which includes information to help students, faculty, staff and home computer users to protect their computers against viruses, worms, spyware, hacker attacks and identity theft.

The alliance, started to promote cyber security and safe online behavior, is a public-private partnership whose members include AOL Time Warner and the Federal Trade Commission. For more information on computing security and connecting to the UD computing network, call the IT Help Center at (302) 831-6000 or e-mail [consult@udel.edu].
