Delaware’s Young wins Gotham Cup shot put

8:48 a.m., Jan. 16, 2007--University of Delaware senior Rachel Young won her second shot put title of the season as the Fightin' Blue Hens indoor track and field teams competed in the Gotham Cup Invitational meet on Friday night at the New York City Armory. Also at the meet, UD's Kelli McDonald finished second in the women's pole vault and Matt O'Brian finished third in the 5,000 meter run.

Young, who won the shot put at last week's Fordham Invitational, had a throw of 13.88 meters to win the competition and claim her 14th career meet title. McDonald went 3.45 meters in the pole vault and O'Brian ran to a time of 15:38.52 in the 5,000 meters.

The UD women's team had nine top 10 finishes. The 4x800 meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos, Laura Heenan and Kellyn Wright finished fifth in 9:42.87, Wright sixth in the 800 meters (2:22.02), Amanda Marshall seventh in the shot put (13.03 meters) and Asha Quant seventh in the long jump (5.34 meters).

Also, Brooke Maguire finished eighth in the seeded 3,000 meters (10:40.90), the 4x400 meter relay team of Michelle Gomes, Liz Harvin, Cristine Marquez, and Alexi Capsouras finished eighth (3:55.85), and Laura Chirico finished 10th in the pole vault (3.15 meters). Gomes also finished 11th in the 60 meters with the second best time in school history (7.79), and Capsouras finished 11th in the 500 meters (1:19.91) and 12th in the 60 meter hurdles (9.32).

The UD men's team had eight top 10 finishes as Jared Wasser finished fifth in the shot put (15.68 meters), Conrad Rupp sixth in the pole vault (4.20 meters), Chris Johnson sixth in the 60 meters (7.33), Dave DiVirgilio eighth in the pole vault (4.20 meters), Matt Arbaugh ninth in the pole vault (4.05 meters) and Matt Guida ninth in the pole vault (4.05 meters). Also, the distance medley relay team of Gregg Cantwell, Tim Brock, Matt Gray, and Mike Zeberkiewicz finished 10th (10:50.53).
