UD women’s track team wins Covert Classic

UD sprinter Asha Quant won two events at Lehigh.

8:58 a.m., Jan. 29, 2007--University of Delaware sprinter Asha Quant won two events to lead the women's indoor track and field team to a championship at the John Covert Indoor Track and Field Classic held Saturday at Lehigh University's Rauch Field House.

The UD women's team had six first place finishes to earn 128 points and outdistance Towson University, St. Joseph's University, Sacred Heart University, Lehigh, Moravian College, East Stroudsburg University, Richard Stockton College and Ursinus College in the nine-team field.

Quant won the 60 meters in 7.84 and the 200 meters in 25.63, and also finished third in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9.5 inches. Christina Antonopoulos won the mile (5:15.84), Cristine Marquez won the 400 meters (58.82) and was second in the 200 meters (26.01), Alexi Capsouras won the 500 meters (1:19.83) and was second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.35) and Rachel Young won the shot put for the fourth time this season with a toss of 44 feet, 4.25 inches.

The UD men's team, with Matt Guida winning the pole vault, finished fourth overall with 62 points. Lehigh took the men's team title with 131 points, followed by Sacred Heart, East Stroudsburg, UD, Moravian, Ursinus, Richard Stockton, Rowan University, Kean University, the U.S. Military Academy and St. Joseph's in the 11-team field.

Guida won the pole vault with a lead of 15 feet, 3 3/4 inches, for the second highest jump in school history. Jared Wasser was second in the shot put (52 feet, 10.25 inches) and Matt O'Brian was third in the 3,000 meters (9:16.45).
