Blue Hen tennis team competes at VCU tourney
8:53 a.m., Jan. 29, 2007--The University of Delaware women's tennis team resumed its 2006-07 season at the Virginia Commonwealth University 4x1 Invitational tournament held during the weekend at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond. The Fightin' Blue Hens dropped three contests, falling 3-2 to Campbell University and 5-0 to host Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday and 4-1 to East Carolina University on Sunday. UD opened the tournament quickly, with Susan Pollack and Amanda Campbell earning victories at number one and two singles against Campbell. However, the Hens lost the remaining singles matches and the doubles match to fall 3-2l. At No. 1 singles, Pollack defeated Blanca Saenz 6-3, 6-2, and at No. 2, Campbell downed Scarlet Alfonzo 6-4, 6-2. In the other matches, Campbell's Tanya Ahuja defeated Liz Perlow 7-5, 7-5 at No. 3 singles, Liza Bensimon defeated Sari Shuster 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, and Nina Surviladze and Ana Surviladze teamed for a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brittany Barsky and Elena Berry at No. 1 doubles. The Hens then fell to nationally ranked Virginia Commonwealth in the second contest Saturday. The Rams swept all five matches as Marianna Yuferova downed Pollock 6-0, 6-2; Viktoria Konstantinova defeated Campbell 6-0, 6-0; Olga Borisova defeated Berry 6-1, 6-0; Varinia Soler defeated Barsky 6-0, 6-0; and Olena Leonchulk and Maria Klokotzky beat Perlow and Shuster in doubles. In the final match of the tournament Sunday, East Carolina defeated the Hens 4-1. UD got its lone win at the No. 2 singles spot when Campbell won her second match of the weekend, defeating Luiza Borges 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 13-11. Anca Dumitru defeated Pollack, Mireia Gol defeated Berry and Brooke Walter defeated Barsky. In the doubles match, Presley Thomas and Alex Smith of East Carolina teamed for a 6-3, 6-2 win over Perlow and Shuster. UD will resume play Feb. 10 at the College of New Jersey Doubles Tournament.
