Delaware men’s tennis opens season in Virginia

UD freshman Austin Longacre won a match at the Virginia Commonwealth Invitational.

8:52 a.m., Jan. 22, 2007--The University of Delaware men's tennis team resumed its 2006-07 season at the Virginia Commonwealth University 4 x 1 Invitational over the weekend at the Thalhimer Tennis Center in Richmond, dropping matches against the U.S. Naval Academy, Virginia Commonwealth and the University of North Carolina Charlotte.

The Fightin' Blue Hens fell to Navy 4-1 and to host Virginia Commonwealth 5-0 on Saturday and dropped a 4-1 decision to UNC Charlotte on Sunday morning.

Against Navy, the Hens won just one match as freshman Austin Longacre defeated Nate Nelms 6-5, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Navy won the other four matches as Jason Hill downed Matt Liebman 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, John Waters posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jon Schwartz at No. 3, Ramsey Lemaich defeated Camilo Perez 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, and Stanley Kahl and Adrian Lai teamed for a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) win over Adam Greenberg and Sam Barrer at No. 1 doubles.

Virginia Commonwealth swept all five matches as Emil Lindgren downed Longacre, Sebastian Ripoll upended Greenberg, Sergi Arumi downed Barrer and Sebastien Deritter defeated Schwartz in singles and Arnaud Le Cloerec and Petr Olsak defeated Liebman and Perez in doubles.

Against UNC Charlotte, the Hens got their lone win at the No. 2 singles spot where Greenberg defeated Ryan Johnson 7-6 (7-3), 6-3. Roy Sichel, ranked No. 31 in the nation in singles, defeated Longacre at No. 1 singles, Aljoscha Jelinek downed Barrer and Ricky Cuellar was a winner over Schwartz. In the lone doubles match, UNC Charlotte's Darren Mancell and Brad Clinard teamed for a 6-3, 6-3 win over Liebman and Perez.

UD will return to action Feb. 10 at the College of New Jersey Doubles Tournament.
