UD women’s swimming defeats James Madison

UD senior Meredith Law won two events in the victory over James Madison.

8:51 a.m., Jan. 16, 2007--The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team had eight first place finishes to easily defeat James Madison University in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet held Saturday at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building. The UD men's team won six events but was edged by JMU.

The UD women's team won 150-93 to improve to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the CAA. The men's team fell 128-115 and is now 5-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Senior Meredith Law and sophomore Maryann Walker led the UD women's team. Law won the 500 freestyle (5:13.93) and 1,000 freestyle (10:42.07) and finished second in the 400 individual medley (4:38.84). Walker won the 200 freestyle (1:56.22) and 200 backstroke (2:07.79) and teaming with sophomores Emily Watts, Kellie Pastore and Sarah Begley to win the 400 medley relay (3:59.70).

Also winning for the UD women's team were Pastore in the 200 breaststroke (2:24.90), sophomore Stephanie House in the 200 butterfly (2:09.42) and junior Michelle Stephens in the 400 individual medley (4:36.46). Stephens, junior Ellen Heinz, Begley, sophomore Kailey Pelton, senior diver Emily Pretz, and freshman Rachel Greene each added two second place finishes.

The UD men's team got three wins each from juniors Adam Blomberg and Andrew Zinn and another diving sweep by sophomore Matt Abbruzzese. Blomberg captured the 200 butterfly (1:58.11), teamed with sophomore John Ohlhaver, senior Brendan Spencer and junior Zinn to win the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.39) and teamed with Spencer, sophomore Mark Erdosy and Zinn to win the 400 medley relay (3:39.48). Zinn also won the 50 freestyle (21.31).

Also for the men's team, Ohlhaver finished second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.31) and junior Troy Sattgast finished second in the 400 medley relay (3:42.84), 1,000 freestyle (10:03.00) and 200 butterfly (1:59.25).
