State EPSCoR program to meet Jan. 23 at DBI

1:43 p.m., Jan. 18, 2007--The Delaware Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) will hold its inaugural annual state meeting Tuesday, Jan. 23, at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute in Newark.

The purpose of this meeting is to strengthen the developing network of the Delaware EPSCoR initiative and to enhance the statewide academic partnerships.

Established by the National Science Foundation and the State of Delaware, the Delaware EPSCoR program seeks to advance the state's research and development capabilities in biotechnology and the biosciences through partnerships involving the state's higher education institutions, including the University of Delaware, Delaware State University, Delaware Technical and Community College and Wesley College, as well as industry and government.

Currently, the Delaware EPSCoR program is focused on complex environmental systems, an area of significant importance in the state.

The Jan. 23 meeting will bring together more than 75 faculty, students and leaders from the participating institutions of higher education, as well as state government officials and representatives of private industry. Also attending will be program managers from several federal agencies.

Lt. Gov. John Carney will discuss the newly formed Delaware Science and Technology Council. There will be a poster session on EPSCoR research and education activities and a panel of NSF, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program managers will discuss new challenges and opportunities for academic research.

Registration will be accepted on site the day of the event, which will run from 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Researchers and members of educational communities are invited to participate.
