UD novice dance teams win silver, bronze medals

1:59 p.m., Jan. 24, 2007--University of Delaware competitors have won silver and bronze medals in the early stages of the 2007 State Farm U.S. Figure Skating Championship being held this week in Spokane.

In the novice division of ice dance, UD skaters Sara Bailey and Kyle Herring finished second and Anastasia Cannuscio and Dean Copely finished third. They were followed closely by Isabella Cannuscio and Ian Lorello, who finished fourth, and Genevieve Deutch and Alex Lorello, who finished eighth. In novice pairs, UD's Minna Lee and Taylor Toth finished in seventh place.

In the senior dance division, UD's Melissa Gregory and Denis Petukhov are in second place and Kimberly Navarro and Brent Bommentre are in fourth place following the original dance portion of the competition. Kate Slattery and C.G. Lee are in 11th place. The free dance will be held Friday.

UD's Clare Farrell and Chase Fishpaw are in 11th place and Lindsay Cohen and Evan Roberts are in 12th place following the original dance competition in the junior dance division.

In junior pairs, Kaela Pflumm and Chris Pottenger are in fourth place and Meg Byrne and Nate Bartholomay are in sixth place after the short program.

The senior ladies competition, with reigning World Champion Kimmie Meissner of UD, will begin Thursday evening with the short program and will conclude Saturday with the long program.
