UD men’s lacrosse team names four co-captains 8 p.m., Jan. 13, 2007--Senior midfielders Alex Smith and Jordan Hall, junior goalkeeper Tommy Scherr and senior defender Brian Calabrese have been named captains of the 2007 University of Delaware men's lacrosse team, Fightin' Blue Hens Head Coach Bob Shillinglaw announced recently. The four will be key members of a team that will have seven starters, its top seven scorers and 20 letter winners back from a team that posted a record of 12-5 and advanced to the Colonial Athletic Association championship game for the second straight season. The Hens have a record of 23-11 over the last two seasons, and have been ranked No. 13 in the nation in the Lacrosse Magazine preseason poll. Calabrese, a two-year letter winner from Syracuse, N.Y., will anchor a strong defense that allowed just 8.18 goals per game in 2006. He played in all 17 games last season with one start and recorded 24 groundballs and seven caused turnovers. Hall, a fourth-year starter from Surrey, British Columbia, was an All-America and the CAA Player of the Year as a sophomore in 2005 and earned second team All-CAA honors last season after ranking third on the team with 36 points on 17 goals and 19 assists. He helped Canada win the world lacrosse championship, playing alongside former UD star John Grant, and will serve as a team captain for the second straight year. Smith, a two-time All-America and three-time All-CAA pick from Timonium, Md., led the nation in face-off percentage a year ago when he won a school record 261 face-offs for a 68.5 winning percentage in 2006. He also scored four goals and ranked No. 2 in the NCAA with 8.59 groundballs per game. Scherr, a native of Owings Mills, Md., is a second-year starter in goal after serving as a backup in 2005. He posted a school record 8.55 goals allowed average last season while registering a .570 save percentage. He also was named to the CAA All-Tournament team last season. UD will open the season against St. Joseph's University on Feb. 10 at Rullo Stadium. |
