National Mentoring Month celebrated statewide

3:44 p.m., Jan. 23, 2007--The Delaware Mentoring Council (DMC) is joining a number of national and local organizations in celebrating National Mentoring Month (NMM). The month-long campaign is a collaborative, public/private initiative sponsored by nonprofit organizations, media companies and government agencies dedicated to recruiting caring adult mentors for America's youth.

A Business Mentoring Breakfast will be held at UD from 8-9 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 31, in 130 Hullihen Hall, hosted by Timothy Barnekov, dean of the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy. Those interested in attending should call Michelle Knights at (302) 831-0520 or e-mail [mknights@udel.edu] by Wednesday, Jan. 24.

Several other NMM events also are planned throughout Delaware.

Mentor Recognition and Poster/Essay Contest Awards are scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 23, at Louis L. Redding Middle School. The event, which honors Appoquinimink School District's mentors and the winners of the statewide 2007 National Mentoring Month Poster/Essay contest, will include dinner and a movie for all in attendance.

From 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m., on “Thank Your Mentor Day” (Thursday, Jan. 25), DMC will distribute postcards at Brew Ha Ha, 1420 North Dupont St., Wilmington; Panera Bread, Main Street, Newark; and Indian River Espresso & Coffee Company, 18 The Circle, Georgetown. Anyone will be able to use a postcard to thank or honor those individuals who encouraged and guided them, and had a lasting impact on their lives. DMC will make sure the postcards are stamped and mailed.

A Business Mentoring Recognition Event will be held from 4:30-7 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26, at the Baby Grand Opera House in Wilmington. DMC and the Business Mentoring Alliance will recognize business leaders for their dedication and support of mentoring in Delaware. The event is open to all business people and community members.

Mentor Delaware-Indian River School District Mentor Recognition Night is slated for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30, at the Clayton Theater in Dagsboro. The Delaware Mentor Delaware-Indian River School District will be hosting a night of movie magic in celebration of NMM. The event will include an awards ceremony followed by a showing of a movie. Advance tickets are free to Indian River School District mentors and are available through the district office by calling Suzanne Farris at (302) 436-1070, extension 147. Tickets at the door are $10 Advance tickets are only available through Thursday, Jan. 25.

Research has shown that programs that rely on volunteer mentors can play a powerful role in reducing drug abuse and youth violence, while greatly enhancing a young person's prospects for leading a healthy and productive life. This year marks the sixth year for the celebration.

Spearheaded by the Harvard Mentoring Project, MENTOR and the Corporation for National and Community Service, NMM focuses national attention on the need for youth mentors. For more information about NMM or to become a mentor, call DMC at (302) 831-0520 or visit [www.delawarementoring.org].
