Hen men's basketball upends Hofstra, 72-68
9:13 a.m., Jan. 30, 2007--The scrappy University of Delaware men's basketball team pulled off a major Colonial Athletic Association upset on Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center, defeating Hofstra University 72-68. Hofstra, a 2006 National Invitation Tournament quarterfinalist and the preseason favorite to win the CAA, entered the game on a four-game winning streak and with a record of 16-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The Fightin' Blue Hens fought hard early in the game but appeared to be in trouble when Hofstra closed the first half with 11 straight points to carry a 37-30 lead into the break. UD battled back, however, and tied the game at 46-46 on a three-point basket by freshman point guard Brian Johnson with 15:09 left to play. The Hens took the led for good when senior guard Calvin Cannon hit a three-point basket for a 64-61 lead with 3:25 remaining. Hofstra pulled to within 64-63 on a basket by star Loren Stokes but UD freshman guard Darrell Johnson hit three free throws over the next two minutes to extend the lead. Stokes closed the gap to 67-66 but a three-point basket by UD junior forward Sam McMahon with 11 seconds left extended the lead once again and two more free throws by Darrell Johnson with four seconds left sealed the win. “I'm really proud of our team for stepping up tonight,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “Our kids did an unbelievable job of getting a great win against a quality team like Hofstra. Brian Johnson played a phenomenal game, Sam McMahon hit a huge three-pointer, and Darrell Johnson hit big free throws for us in the end.” Brian Johnson finished the game with a career-high 25 points and junior forward Herb Courtney had 22 points and 11 rebounds. Darrell Johnson had 10 points. The Hens improved to 4-18 overall and 2-9 in the conference. They will return to action at George Mason University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, before returning home to the Bob Carpenter Center for a game against James Madison University at noon, Saturday. |
