Hen men’s basketball faces Hofstra tonight

UD senior guard Calvin Cannon scored 19 points in the loss at Northeastern. The Hens will return to action at 7 p.m., tonight, when they take on Hofstra at the Bob Carpenter Center.

9:04 a.m., Jan. 29, 2007--Coming off a 73-64 loss Saturday at Northeastern University, the University of Delaware men's basketball team will return to action with a Colonial Athletic Association game against Hofstra University at 7 p.m., tonight, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens are 3-18 overall and 1-9 in the CAA while Hofstra is 16-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference, with a strong grip on second place. Virginia Commonwealth University, which is 18-3 overall and 10-0 in the CAA, leads the conference.

In the loss at Northeastern, the Hens got 24 points and nine rebounds from junior forward Herb Courtney and a season-high 19 points from senior guard Calvin Cannon, who sank four three-point shots. Freshman point guard Brian Johnson added 13 points. Overall, UD shot just 37 percent, hitting 21 of 54 attempts from the field.

The Hens trailed 28-24 at halftime and were within two points, 42-40, with 10:45 remaining. However, they were never able to overtake the Huskies, who pulled away late.

“Northeastern hit a couple of tough ones with the shot clock running down and that was great on their part,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “One of the things we talked about coming in was improving our performance on the road and I think we had a much better performance today. We got in a hole in the second half but we climbed back out of it. We just couldn't hit a key bucket when we really needed it. It's important, especially on the road, to have an answer to big run and we did that a few times today and that was nice to see.”

After tonight's game against Hofstra, UD will play at George Mason University on Wednesday evening before returning home to face James Madison University at noon, Saturday, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 7.
