Georgia State defeats UD in men’s basketball

Calvin Cannon scored 11 points for the Hens in the loss to Georgia State.

8:18 a.m., Jan. 18, 2007--Shooting just 27.8 percent from the field, the University of Delaware men's basketball team fell 61-44 to Georgia State University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Wednesday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The game was a mirror image of the Fightin' Blue Hens' previous outing, in which they shot 54.8 percent to defeat the College of William & Mary 77-62. “Our energy level at the start of the game was not what I expected,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “We had the same type of shots as the William & Mary game but they just didn't go in tonight. Give Georgia State credit for coming in and getting a win on the road.”

Senior guard Calvin Cannon led the Hens with 11 points, while junior forward Herb Courtney had 10 points and 14 rebounds.

With the loss, UD fell to 3-15 overall and 1-6 in the CAA. The Hens will remain at home for a game against longtime rival Drexel University at noon, Saturday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. Drexel has had an outstanding season, with a string of December victories over Villanova University, Syracuse University and Temple University.

The Drexel game will be televised on Comcast CN8. As a special promotion, royal blue Delaware T-shirts, sponsored by CSX Transportation, will be distributed free to fans at the game on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 3,000 shirts will be distributed. Also, UD students will receive special Cockpit T-shirts and 50 students will receive yellow spirit wigs.
