Hen men’s basketball gains first CAA victory

UD junior forward Herb Courtney helped lift the Hens to their first CAA victory over the season.

8:57 a.m., Jan. 16, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team earned its first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season, defeating the College of William & Mary 77-62 in a game played Saturday night at the Bob Carpenter Center.

In the victory over William & Mary, which fell to 10-6 overall and 3-3 in the conference, the Hens had season highs for points, three-point field goals (12) and field goal percentage (54.8). Junior forward Herb Courtney led the Hens with 27 points and 11 rebounds, while forward Sam McMahon had 15 points, including four three-point baskets. Senior guard Calvin Cannon had 14 points, freshman guard Darrell Johnson had 11 points and freshman point guard Brian Johnson had a career high 10 assists.

The Hens broke out after an early 10-10 tie with 13:45 left in the first half, outscoring William & Mary 9-2 over the next six minutes and leading the rest of the way.

“What I am most proud of is the way our guys followed our game plan and defended William & Mary tonight,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “Human nature is to get down on yourself but our guys just don't do that. Tonight our shots were going down and when that happens for one guy, it becomes a snowball effect.”

With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 3-14 overall and 1-5 in the conference. The Hens will remain at home for a pair of CAA games this week, taking on Georgia State University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, and longtime rival Drexel University at noon, Saturday. Georgia State is 6-10 overall and 2-4 in the conference while Drexel is 12-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

For students interested in attending the Georgia State game, the UD Alumni Association is offering shuttle bus service to all night games. The bus will begin pickups one hour before game time, with the first stop being at Perkins Student Center and subsequent stops, in order, at University Courtyard, School Lane Garden Apartments, Smith Overpass, Ray Street, Pencader, Christiana Towers, Rodney/Dickinson, Towne Court Apartments and South College Avenue, in front of the Delaware Field House.

The Drexel game will be televised on Comcast CN8. As a special promotion, royal blue Delaware T-shirts, sponsored by CSX Transportation, will be distributed free to fans at the game on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 3,000 shirts will be distributed. Also, UD students will receive special Cockpit T-shirts and 50 students will receive yellow spirit wigs.

Drexel has had an outstanding season, with a string of December victories over Villanova University, Syracuse University and Temple University.
