Hens men’s basketball falls to Old Dominion

Sam McMahon had 12 points and 12 rebounds in the loss to Old Dominion.

8:50 a.m., Jan. 11, 2007--Old Dominion University defeated the University of Delaware 83-48 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Wednesday night in Norfolk, Va. It was the worst defeat of the season for the Fightin' Blue Hens, who dropped their fifth straight game and are now 2-14 overall and 0-5 in the CAA.

UD junior Sam McMahon led the team with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Calvin Cannon added 10 points. Junior forward Herb Courtney, the team's leading scorer, was held to just nine points.

The Hens led 10-5 in the first five minutes but Old Dominion stormed back, taking 44-28 lead at the half and extending that lead with a 13-0 run to open the second half.

“I told our team that I thought they played very hard, but this shows the separation between us and the elite in this league,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “We caught them a little by surprise early, but they responded and we had no answers. This speaks volumes of the talent level of Old Dominion.”

UD now returns home to the Bob Carpenter Center for three straight games. The Hens will face the College of William & Mary at 7 p.m., Saturday, Georgia State University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17, and Drexel University at noon Saturday, Jan. 20.

The Hens are increasingly short-handed, most recently losing sophomore forward Pau Geli for the season due to a lung ailment.
