Towson tops Blue Hens in CAA men’s basketball

Herb Courtney scored 29 points in the loss to Towson.

8:20 a.m., Jan. 9, 2007--The shorthanded University of Delaware men's basketball team fell 75-68 to Towson University in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Monday night before 2,966 fans at the Bob Carpenter Center.

The Fightin' Blue Hens, who announced shortly before the game that guard Zaire Taylor has taken a leave of absence from the team for an indefinite period of time, took an early lead but succumbed to a second half rally by hot-shooting Towson.

UD was in front 37-33 at the half but Towson scored the first 10 points of the second half and, after fighting off a rally by the Hens, pulled away in the final five minutes. The Tigers shot .625 for the game, setting a new Bob Carpenter Center record.

“The first four minutes of the second half really hurt us,” UD Head Coach Monté Ross said. “We are not a good enough team to get into a shootout with teams. The key for us will be to maintain this type of effort on the road.”

UD junior forward Herb Courtney, who is among the CAA leaders, scored a career-high 29 points and led the Hens with nine rebounds and three steals. Sam McMahon scored 12 points and Calvin Cannon scored 11.

With the loss, the Hens fell to 2-13 overall and 0-4 in the conference. They will return to action with a CAA game at Old Dominion University at 7 p.m., Wednesday.

After that trip, UD will return home to the Bob Carpenter Center for three straight games. The Hens will face the College of William & Mary at 7 p.m., Saturday, Georgia State University at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17, and Drexel University at noon Saturday, Jan. 20.

In addition to the loss of Taylor, UD announced that transfer forward DeSean White, who was expected to compete for the Hens in 2007-08, has been dismissed from the University after being declared academically ineligible.
