UD hotel employee honored

Bill Sullivan (right), managing director of the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel, congratulates Juan Valderrama on being named outstanding housekeeper of the year by the Delaware Hotel and Lodging Association.

2:31 p.m., Jan. 30, 2007--Juan Valderrama, an employee of the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel, was named “outstanding housekeeper of the year” at the annual Stars of the Industry Awards Dinner held by the Delaware Hotel and Lodging Association on Friday evening, Jan. 26, at the Christiana Hilton.

“The award is based on the notion that outstanding--and often unusual--service makes the best impression,” Tracy Holmes, director of operations at the Courtyard Newark-University of Delaware hotel, who nominated Valderrama, said. “This award is given to the nonmanagement employee who demonstrates exceptional commitment to the property, the guest and/or the community.”

About Valderrama, Holmes said that he was a natural candidate for the award because of his willingness to help guests and coworkers, and because of his consistent job performance.

“Have you ever seen an employee stop everything to help a fellow coworker?” Holmes said at the awards ceremony. “If you could bottle the work ethic, the attention to detail, the willingness to improve or the plain and simple attitude, [Juan] is the person we would want to take the ingredients from.”

Holmes emphasized that Valderrama also earned the award for his communication skills, which included translation duties for some of his colleagues who only speak Spanish.

“The housekeepers look forward to [Juan's] support,” Holmes said. “[He] is the first person to say 'Yes' and the last to say 'No,' [and] is the employee who keeps the team's spirits high on the most grueling days.”
