Sussex Master Gardeners offer workshops

10:37 a.m., Jan. 22, 2007--The Sussex County Master Gardeners of Delaware Cooperative Extension of UD and Delaware State University are holding workshops in the Carvel Research and Education Center in Georgetown and the Masters Gardeners Demonstration Garden, located behind the center.

The workshops are free, except where noted, but participants should register by calling Sharon Webb at (302)-856-2585, extension 540. Those with special needs should inform her when registering.

In addition to the workshops, Master Gardeners invite interested persons to join them in working in their garden from 9-11 a.m., Tuesdays, April 17, May 15 and June 19. Bring gloves and hand tools.

Indoor workshops

Planning a Garden, 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30. Ana Dittel and Linda Peters will discuss the basics of starting a garden from scratch, including types of gardens, soil and design.

Starting Plants from Seeds, 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 8. Ila Meyers will discuss the basics of starting seeds, including containers, lighting, temperature, moisture and soil.

Is it a Nesting Box or Birdhouse? 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20. Nancy Davis will discuss bird habitats, housing needs and what attracts birds to a yard. Participants who bring $10 and a Phillips-head screwdriver can build a cedar abode for birds.

Don't Let Your Home Be a Home for Bugs, 6:30, Thursday, March 15. Susan King will discuss indoor pests, how to identify and control them.

Weeds--Identification and Control, 7 p.m., Tuesday, March 27. Jay Windsor will discuss the difference between weeds and flowers and how to control weeds.

Tomatoes--Planting and Growing, 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11. Greta Reed will discuss tomato varieties and how, when and where to plant them.

Shade Gardening, 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 24. Bobbie Ranney will talk about managing shade, shade-gardening techniques and shade-loving plants.

Gardening in Miniature, 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 8. Emily Peterson will demonstrate how to build a miniature garden scene.

Magnolias around the World and One or More for Your Garden, Too, 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 15. Susan Bitzer will discuss uses of magnolia bark, wood and flowers and the many varieties and planting requirements.

Gardening for Part-time Residents, 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 22. Ingrid Hetfield will talk about challenges of part-time gardeners and show easy-care landscape plans for summer homes.

Garden Workshops

Paint and Plant a Pot, 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 19. Donna Fuhrman invites children as well as adults for a hands-on workshop on decorating a clay pot. Participants can join in for $5 to cover materials. Pots will be planted with fast-growing seeds. Class size is limited.

Using Lavender, 7 p.m., Tuesday, June 26. Terri Carr will discuss the many varieties of lavender, their soil and water preferences, when to prune and harvest and the many uses of lavender. Participants may sample baked goods made with lavender.
