Dining Services’ gifts bolster food bank coffers

12:06 p.m., Jan. 22, 2007--UD Dining Services and the Delaware Food Bank have established a partnership to provide food for those in need.

On Dec. 22, UD's Dining Services staff loaded boxes and cases of produce, dry goods, frozen items and more than 60 turkeys onto a Delaware Food Bank truck. Dining Services has been donating unused perishable goods to the food bank for some time, but this was the first time it supplied food for the holidays.

“Dining Services recognizes the valuable service the Delaware Food Bank provides to those in need in our community. We are pleased to be part of this good work,” Sue Bogan, director of Dining Services, said.

The holiday partnership began in December with the Dining Services staff donating turkeys and all the trimmings to the food bank for distribution. Families received quantities of yellow squash, zucchini, chopped Romaine lettuce, Idaho potatoes, snow peas, wheat berry salad, mushrooms, sliced apples, tomatoes, cucumbers, spinach and more.

According to Anne Killeen, director of development for the Food Bank of Delaware, the donations made by Dining Services staff and ARAMARK, which operates Dining Services at UD, "significantly helped us in achieving our goal of making sure that every family in need had a holiday meal on their table.

"Every holiday season, the Food Bank of Delaware distributes over 8,000 turkeys throughout the state," Killeen said. "The season is about generosity and 'giving back' to the community, and ARAMARK is truly the embodiment of the spirit of goodwill," Anne Killeen, director of development for the food bank, said.

Robin Moore, senior director of residential dining and catering, said the holiday program enhances Dining Services end-of-the semester affiliation with the food bank. "We are proud of the relationship that we've developed over the years with the folks from the food bank by donating all of our perishable goods at the end of each semester."
