12 legislative fellows begin apprenticeships

3:14 p.m., Jan. 19, 2007--Twelve UD graduate and undergraduate students selected as 2006-07 legislative fellows began six-month apprenticeships conducting research for the 144th Delaware General Assembly on Jan. 9.

The Legislative Fellows Program, cosponsored by the state legislature and the Institute for Public Administration at UD, links the research capacity of the University with the research needs of the General Assembly.

Legislative fellows work in Dover 20 hours a week from January through June and earn a stipend comparable to a UD research assistantship while taking a three-credit graduate seminar, "State and Local Government: Management and Policy.”

For the students, selected through a University-wide competition, the experience offers a valuable opportunity to observe and contribute to the political decision-making process. For the General Assembly, the program provides the research skills of the fellows, as well as a link to University resources.

Through their nonpartisan, in-depth research, fellows assist legislators in addressing critical issues facing the state. In recent years, fellows have worked in areas as diverse as land-use planning, education reform and juvenile justice.

The 2007 fellows are:
