Political science senior receives more kudos
3:56 p.m., Jan. 31, 2007--Senior Jonathan Olmsted has been appointed a junior fellow of the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS), one of approximately 150 junior fellows overall and one of approximately 40 political science students selected. The academy invites leading social science departments in the U.S. to designate one undergraduate senior each year as a junior fellow. The fellow must demonstrate an outstanding grasp of theories and methods, as shown in coursework in the student's major, and an enthusiasm for understanding social issues and must show promise of making substantial contributions to the social sciences in the future. “It is refreshing and encouraging to be recognized by AAPSS,” Olmsted said. As a junior fellow, Olmsted has access to academic databases and is invited to submit a research paper to a competition open only to junior fellows, 10 of whom will be selected to receive stipends to attend the members-installation banquet. “Jon is an exceptional student with substantial skills in social science inquiry and research,” James Magee, chairperson of political science and international relations, said. “Talented, well trained and very enthusiastic, Jon is headed to a distinguished university graduate program. He's a naturally gifted and inquisitive empirical social scientist in the making, from and about whom I am confident we'll be hearing quite a bit once he finds his rightful place in the academic profession.” This fall Olmsted's paper, “The Effect of Economic Conditions on President Bush's Approval,” was runner up in the national Best Course Paper competition, sponsored by Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society under the umbrella of the American Political Science Association. This is the first time a UD student has been recognized. Olmsted is currently working on his senior thesis (with the working title, “Explaining Quality of Representation") in the U.S. Senate and has applied to graduate schools. Article by Sue Moncure |
