Winter Commencement facts
3:41 p.m., Jan. 6, 2007--Although Winter Commencement takes place in the new year, the latest graduates are officially members of the Class of 2006, since they completed their degree requirements in August and December. In all, 1,456 degrees were conferred Jan. 6, including 153 doctoral degrees, 338 master's degrees, 888 bachelor's degrees and 77 associate degrees:
- Graduates represent 39 states (plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) and 51 countries;
- The flags on stage at the ceremony celebrate the American states and territories--and more than 100 foreign countries--represented among UD's student body. The presentation of flags pays tribute to University benefactor Pierre S. du Pont, who played a leadership role in establishing the University's study abroad program--the first program of its kind in the world. Du Pont Hall is named in his honor. UD is ranked first in study abroad participation among the nation's public institutions of higher education;
- The most popular female name is Jennifer, the most popular male name is Michael;
- Two graduates celebrating birthdays on Jan. 6 are Stephanie Ripanti of Townsend and William Hornung of Wilmington; and
- The oldest graduate is Grace Dougherty George, 68, of Townsend, who is receiving a bachelor's degree from the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy and minored in Italian.
