Wellness Center offers employees exercise options

2:25 p.m., Jan. 5, 2007--Make those New Year's resolutions to be more fit and healthier come true with help from the Employee Wellness Center. The center is offering three programs to help employees become more physically active in 2007.

Express Workout

Office workers, unite in groups of five or more, and the Wellness Center staff will visit your workplace on the Newark campus and present an interactive workshop on quick and effective exercises that burn calories, tone muscles and improve flexibility during a 30-minute workout. Illustrated handouts of all demonstrated exercises will be provided. Cost is 10 Wellness Dollars per participant.

First Step to Fitness

Take advantage of two popular fitness services that are available for a special price during January by scheduling an individual appointment with a Wellness Center staff member and receive a fitness assessment and personal exercise plan. The 45-minute session includes measurement of resting heart rate and blood pressure, body composition, aerobic endurance and muscle strength and flexibility. Based on the results, receive a personalized plan for an exercise program to meet your goals. Cost is 35 Wellness Dollars, a savings of 10 Wellness Dollars

Winter strength training

A noontime lecture/demonstration of simple and effective muscle toning exercises will be offered from 12:10-12:50 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25, in 126 Alfred Lerner Hall. Linda Smith, program coordinator and exercise physiologist, will highlight the use of exercise bands as a convenient way to improve muscle strength without going to a gym or using weights.

“While the New Year is a time for many to begin exercising more, bad weather or the demands of work and family can prevent many people from working out in a gym,” Smith said. “Our goal is to show employees how easy it can be to improve their muscle strength using exercise bands.”

Participants will receive a free exercise band and illustrated workout guide, and there will be a drawing for a gift certificate for two for brunch, donated by the Inn at Mendenhall. Cost is 10 Wellness Dollars.
