Tax breaks aren’t just for the rich 3:07 p.m., Jan. 30, 2007--The Delaware EITC Campaign, a coalition of government, business and social services, is reaching out to employees and employers in an effort to increase awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and its benefits, including free tax preparation services. EITC is a refundable federal income tax credit for low- and moderate-income workers, primarily for those raising children. Employees who qualify are often unaware of this special tax credit and that they can get free help filing their taxes. According to Nehemiah Gateway Community Development Corp's EITC eligibility guidelines, Delaware workers with an earned income of up to $40,000 are eligible for the EITC, depending upon family size and income. To receive the EITC, eligible taxpayers must file a 2006 tax return and complete a special form. Refunds can be as high as $4,500 for those who claim and qualify for the credit. The state of Delaware also has an EITC. Last year, eligible Delaware taxpayers saved up to $475. Taxpayers whose household income is $40,000 or less can have their tax forms prepared and filed electronically by an Internal Revenue Service-trained volunteer at convenient statewide locations through April 15. For complete information about free EITC tax preparation, visit [www.nehemiahgateway.org/Documents/TaxSiteAd07.pdf], and for a list of tax preparation locations, visit [www.eitcdelaware.net/schedule.htm].
