Prof honored by athletic trainers association
2:47 p.m., Jan. 30, 2007--Thomas Kaminski, associate professor in the Department of Health, Nutrition and Exercise Sciences, with colleague Jay Hertel from the University of Virginia, was invited to give the “Research to Reality” lecture at the Eastern Athletic Trainers Association (EATA) annual meeting in January in Boston. The presentation, sponsored by the research committee, is EATA's highest honor for researchers. The presentation focused on ankle instability and the links between research and clinical applications. Ankle sprains are one of the most common injuries among athletes and the general population, Kaminski said, and can lead to chronic pain and instability. He said he is interested in treatment after the initial sprain in terms of bracing and taping and the importance and effect of rehabilitation and exercise. Another area of his research is the effect of osteoarthritis on the ankle. Kaminski serves as director of UD's Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program, as codirector of the Athletic Training Research Laboratory and has a faculty appointment in UD's Biomechanics and Movement Science Graduate Program. Kaminski, who joined the UD faculty in 2003, is a graduate of Marietta College, received his master's degree from the University of Arizona and his doctorate from the University of Virginia. Kaminski is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine. |
