Deck desks with daffodils to help fight cancer

9:46 a.m., Jan. 29, 2007--Daffodil Day, March 14, is a caring, sharing way to support cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services through the American Cancer Society by purchasing pots and bunches of the springtime favorite flowers, according to Gwen Davis, administrative assistant in the Office of the Vice President and University Secretary, who is coordinating the event.

Daffodils put a bit of springtime in homes and the workplace and at the same time raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society, Davis said. Pots of mini-bulbs and and bunches of 10 cut flowers are still just $10 each, and anonymous gifts can be delivered to cancer patients through the “Gifts of Hope” program for $25. In addition, a second Boyd's Bear, Hugh R. Hope, has been created especially for the American Cancer Society and comes with a bunch of daffodils for $25.

The deadline for ordering is Monday, Feb. 19. To order, contact your office Daffodil Day coordinator or call the American Cancer Society at (302) 324-4227. Payment must be made in advance by check, made out to the American Cancer Society.

Federal Express will deliver the daffodils to Davis's office before 5 p.m. (usually by the lunch hour), Wednesday, March 14, so that arrangements can be made to pick them up.

Last year the University of Delaware was number four in Delaware in raising money through Daffodil Day, sending $9,157 to the American Cancer Society, almost doubling the amount raised the year before, according to Davis.

Volunteers across the campus have order forms for the daffodils or donors may contact Davis at (302) 831-2113 or [gdavis@udel.edu].
