Men's basketball team to host Special Olympians

11:42 a.m., Jan. 26, 2007--The University of Delaware men's basketball team and Head Coach Monté Ross will host a basketball clinic for Special Olympics Delaware athletes from 6:30-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 1, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

During the clinic, Ross and his players will be giving Special Olympic athletes hands-on lessons in hoop skills that include dribbling, ball handling, passing and shooting. The clinic also will provide tips on warming up and stretching exercises.

About 40 Special Olympic athletes are expected to participate in the clinic.

The UD men's basketball team joins a growing group of local programs that host sports-specific clinics intended to improve the overall training and competition experience for Special Olympics Delaware athletes

Previous clinics have been conducted by the UD women's soccer team, Delaware State University women's bowling and softball teams and Wesley College women's volleyball. Other participants in Special Olympics Delaware clinics include Salesianum High School boy's basketball team, the Alexis I. duPont High School boy's volleyball teams and Kirkwood Soccer Club.

Special Olympics Delaware is an organization that changes lives by promoting understanding, acceptance and inclusion between people with and without intellectual disabilities. The organization offers year-round sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

Special Olympics is an international movement which, through year-round sports training and competition in the Olympic tradition, gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to strengthen their character, develop their physical skills, display their talents and fulfill their human potential.
