New organization of the Office of the Provost
2:02 p.m., Jan. 8, 2007--The Office of the Provost has been reorganized to allow for better integration and coordination of its many functions, all to enhance and support the services it offers the University campus, according to Provost Dan Rich. Notable changes have been made in redefining the roles, responsibilities and reporting functions of the provost, the vice provost for academic affairs and the vice provost for research, Rich said. As part of the reorganization, Rich announced that Havidán Rodríguez, vice provost of academic affairs, has been named vice provost for academic affairs and international programs, and that Carolyn Thoroughgood, vice provost for research, has been named vice provost for research and graduate studies, both effective Jan. 1. “Both Havidán and Carolyn have had distinguished careers in their chosen fields and bring a wealth of administrative experience and scholarly accomplishments to these new and expanded positions within the Office of the Provost,” Rich said. As vice provost of academic affairs and international programs, Rodríguez will have additional responsibility for the Center for International Studies and the Office of Undergraduate Studies and also oversee the Office of Educational Assessment and Special Sessions. Other responsibilities include such initiatives as diversity programs, assistance with the process of faculty promotion and tenure, coordination with the Faculty Senate, academic program reviews, permanent status program reviews, the academic common market, the transfer of credit matrix and articulation. In addition, Rodríguez will convene the Provost's Advisory Council, the Associate/Assistant Deans Council and the advisory council for the Office of Educational Assessment and serve as cochairperson of the Academic and Student Affairs Council.
A graduate of the University of Maryland, Rodríguez received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Thoroughgood's new responsibilities include enhancing the integration and coordinated development of scholarship and graduate education across campus. Both the Research Office and the Office of Graduate Studies now report to her, and she will have oversight of the development and growth of University-wide interdisciplinary programs, such as the Delaware Biotechnology Institute and the Clean Energy Center, with the goal of strengthening graduate education across the campus and promoting excellence and equity in all graduate programs. She also serves as the University of Delaware's research integrity officer. As vice provost for research and graduate studies, Thoroughgood will convene the Research Advisory Board, the Responsible Conduct for Research Council and the Graduate Council, and will represent the University's teaching and research programs on matters of occupational health and safety. A graduate of the University of Delaware, with a doctorate from the University of Maryland, Thoroughgood joined the UD faculty in 1968 as a nutritional biochemist and has served as the dean of the College of Marine and Earth Studies and Delaware Sea Grant director from 1984-2004. She has served on many state and national organizations and helped organize the Council on Ocean Affairs that evolved into the Consortium for Oceanographic Research and Education and served as chairperson of its board of governors. She was named to the Science Advisory Panel of the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy and to the Science Advisory Board of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Article by Sue Moncure
