Blue Hen Weekend: Hoops, track, swimming

Junior forward Herb Courtney will lead the Hens against Drexel at noon, Saturday, at the Bob Carpenter Center.

9:42 a.m., Jan. 19, 2007--Saturday will be a busy day on campus for University of Delaware scholar-athletes, with a men's basketball game at the Bob Carpenter Center, a track and field meet at the Delaware Field House and a swimming and diving meet at the Harry W. Rawstrom Natatorium in the Carpenter Sports Building.

The Fightin' Blue Hens men's basketball team will take the court against longtime rival Drexel University in a Colonial Athletic Association contest at noon, Saturday, in a game to be televised by Comcast CN8. UD is 3-15 overall and 1-6 in the CAA, following an impressive victory over the College of William & Mary with a cold-shooting loss to Georgia State University on Wednesday night.

Drexel is 13-4 overall, with a string of December victories over Villanova University, Syracuse University and Temple University, and 5-2 in the conference.

As a special promotion, royal blue Delaware T-shirts, sponsored by CSX Transportation, will be distributed free to fans at the game on a first-come, first-served basis. A total of 3,000 shirts will be distributed. Also, UD students will receive special Cockpit T-shirts and 50 students will receive yellow spirit wigs.

Track and field fans will find plenty of action beginning at 11 a.m. at the Delaware Field House, site of the Delaware Invitational. Running events include the 60-meter dash, the 60-meter high hurdles, the 200-meter dash, the 400-meter dash and runs of 500, 800, 1,000, 3,000 and 5,000 meters. There also will be a mile run and 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays. Field events include the weight throw, shot put, long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault. The field events will begin at 11, with running events at noon.

The UD men's and women's swimming and diving teams will take on Loyola College of Maryland in a non-conference dual meet beginning at 1 p.m. The women's team is 11-2 overall and the men's team is 5-6.

UD teams will be on the road Sunday, with the women's basketball team visiting Hofstra University at 1 p.m., and the men's tennis team competing in a tournament at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. The basketball team is 15-2 overall and 6-0 in the CAA following a 68-55 victory over the College of William & Mary on Thursday night at the Bob Carpenter Center. Hofstra is 14-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
