Menchaca, Buchholz are All-America selections

8:56 a.m., Jan. 11, 2007--Two University of Delaware baseball players, junior centerfielder Brandon Menchaca and sophomore infielder Alex Buchholz, have been named to the Louisville Slugger Collegiate Baseball News preseason All-America team.

Menchaca hit .395 with 16 home runs and 64 runs batted in for the Fightin' Blue Hens in 2006. He finished in the top 10 in the Colonial Athletic Association in every offensive category except for walks, and was named first team All-CAA, first team American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region, third team Louisville Slugger All-America and third team ABCA All-America.

Buchholz hit .378 with 18 home runs and 64 runs batted in last season, trying a UD record with three home runs in a game against James Madison University on March 18. He also helped out on the mound for the injury-ravaged pitching staff, with two wins, two saves and a 4.91 earned run average in six appearances. Buchholz was named to the Louisville Slugger and Baseball America Freshman All-America teams and the ABCA All-East Region second team, and earned first team All-CAA and CAA Rookie of the Year honors.

Menchaca and Buchholz spearheaded a UD offense that led the nation in home runs per game, doubles per game and slugging percentage, and also ranked among the national leaders in runs scored.

The Hens will open the 2007 season with a weekend series at the University of Richmond on Feb. 23-25 and then will travel to the University of Virginia for a series with the No. 10-ranked Cavaliers on March 2-4.
