Nominations sought for Excellence in Service Awards

10:53 a.m., Jan. 22, 2007--Nominations of salaried and professional staff who go “above and beyond” in their jobs are being sought for UD's Excellence in Service Award, now in its second year. The awards are given annually with up to six awards each year, with each recipient receiving $2,500. The deadline is March 31.

“The Excellence in Service Award recognizes professional and salaried staff super stars on campus who have made outstanding contributions to improving campus life by serving students and the University community,” Maxine Colm, vice president for administration, said.

“We hope that many people, including students, will take part in the Excellence in Service Award program by nominating persons they know who have made UD a better place through their actions, attitudes and service,” Richie Holland, manager of human resources and affirmative action in the Office of Human Resources, said.

To qualify, employees must be full-time, be knowledgeable about UD, committed to the University by supporting students and coworkers and making a positive and lasting impact on students and the University community at large.

Last year, four employees were selected for the award. The honorees were:

  • Theresa Kalesse, who has helped countless engineering students from greeting freshmen and their parents to organizing special events to running video review sessions for graduating seniors before their engineering examinations;
  • Maria Palacas, who directs the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, which has the highest rating among the 179 programs nationwide in encouraging students from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds to apply to graduate programs;
  • Ruth Smith of UD's Academic Enrichment Center, who is known for her support and encouragement of students at the center, for assisting her coworkers and her volunteer work; and
  • Ivet Ziegelbauer, coordinator for Gilbert-Harrington Complex, who has taken a leadership role in resident hall education and restructuring interactions between students and resident advisers.
