Nine UD football players earn academic honors

8:31 a.m., Jan. 25, 2007--Nine members of the University of Delaware football team have been selected to the 2006 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference team. Senior quarterback Ryan Carty, junior offensive lineman Greg Benson, junior offensive lineman Mike Byrne, sophomore offensive lineman Jon Herrman, sophomore linebacker Brian Brown, sophomore defensive lineman John Higginson, sophomore linebacker Erik Johnson, junior linebacker J.T. Laws and senior defensive lineman Rachid Stoury were among the 97 scholar-athletes honored for their academic accomplishments.

To be eligible for the award, scholar-athletes must have a cumulative grade point index of 3.0 or higher and be a starter or key reserve. Hofstra University led all schools with 13 players named to the team while the University of New Hampshire had 12, Towson University had 11, and Villanova University and UD had nine each. University of Maine senior quarterback Ron Whitcomb was named the Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year.

Carty, a senior quarterback who saw action in two games, is a business management major. Benson played in the final four games of the season, starting the final three, after missing the first half of the season with a knee injury. Byrne started all 11 games at left tackle for the Fightin' Blue Hens, earned third team All-Atlantic 10 honors and was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America District II All-Academic Team. Herrman saw action in all 11 games at center and started the final 10 contests.

Brown played in 11 games with seven starts and recorded 27 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups. Johnson played in 11 games with 10 starts and was second on the team with 78 tackles to go with a team-high 9.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, two interceptions, and one forced fumble. Laws, a first-year transfer from the University of Pennsylvania, saw action in 11 games, started one contest, and recorded 31 tackles and recovered one fumble.

Both Higginson and Stoury played in nine games, with Higginson recording three tackles and two pass breakups and Stoury registering 13 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss.
