Three recruits signed by UD women’s soccer

Scott Grzenda, head coach of the UD women’s soccer team, has signed three recruits.

3:24 p.m., Feb. 8, 2007--Three high school standouts have signed to complete for the University of Delaware women's soccer team, Fightin' Blue Hens Head Coach Scott Grzenda announced on Thursday.

Declaring their intention to attend UD are Ilyssa Friedman of Malvern, Pa., and West Chester East High School, Amy Pickard of Lancaster (Pa.) Catholic High School and Alli Williams of Newark and William Penn High School.

Friedman, a central defender, is a three-time first team All-Ches-Mont League selection and a two-time all-area team selection. She competes for the Spirit United Gaels club team, which was ranked second in the nation as a USYSA national finalist, Region One champion and eastern Pennsylvania champion. She is also a three-year member of the eastern Pennsylvania state team.

“Ilyssa will provide us with instant leadership and organization in the back,” Grzenda said. “She is a great one-on-one defender who can also contribute to the attack and score goals. We are very happy she chose Delaware to continue her athletic and academic career.”

Pickard, a forward, is a three-time first team all-star selection and was named to the All-State team. Pickard, who played with the club team Pennsylvania Classics, was a forward on the eastern Pennsylvania state team and played in the back on the Olympic Development Regional team. She was also a four-year member of the basketball team at Lancaster Catholic.

“Amy is a very technical, athletic and hard working player. She has the ability to score goals in bunches and the versatility to be an outstanding defender at the same time,” Grzenda said. “We expect Amy to contribute all over the field.”

Williams, a talented attacking player, has been All-Blue Hen Conference and All-State. She has played with the Kirkwood Phantoms club team for 10 years, helping them capture six consecutive state championships, and was a five-year starter for the Delaware Olympic Development Program team.

“Alli is a terrific athlete and one of the best players in the state. We try to keep the best Delaware players in state, that's why we're so happy Alli chose UD,” Grzenda said. “She is an outstanding attacking midfielder who will give everyone we play fits.”

UD finished the 2006 season 8-8-3 overall and 3-7-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
