UD women’s basketball pulls away from Towson
9:22 a.m., Feb. 19, 2007--The University of Delaware women's basketball team pulled away in the second half to defeat host Towson University 70-52 in a Colonial Athletic Association contest played Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 22-4 overall and 13-2 in the CAA. UD assured itself of at least a third place finish in the conference standings and a first round bye in the CAA tournament, which will be played March 8-11 at the Bob Carpenter Center. “We played an outstanding second half,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “Our seniors really stepped it up and you always have to be happy when you have four players score in double figures. Defensively we did a much better job on the boards and our offensive execution was better in the second half. Courtney Irving really stepped it up today. She wanted the ball offensively and we need more of that from her the rest of the way.” Senior Tyresa Smith scored 23 points, and in so doing became the first UD player since Lori Howard in 1979-80 to score 20 or more points in six straight games. Senior guard Alena Koshansky added 18 points, senior forward Chrissy Fisher added 15 points and 13 rebounds and Irving came off the bench to contribute 10 points. The Hens will return to action with an important CAA game against conference leader James Madison University at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Dukes are ranked No. 22 in the most recent Associated Press poll. The James Madison game will be UD Employees Night at the game, and the athletics department is making 1,000 free tickets available to University employees. The free tickets are now available at the University Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center and the YoUDee Shop in the Trabant University Center. UD employees must show proper identification and there is a limit of four tickets per person. UD will close out the regular season with a home game against Drexel University at 1 p.m., Sunday, and a game at Northeastern University at 7 p.m., Thursday, March 1. |
