UD women’s basketball falls to Old Dominion

UD senior Tyresa Smith scored 25 points in the loss to Old Dominion.

9:03 a.m., Feb. 12, 2007--The University of Delaware women's basketball team slipped to third place in the Colonial Athletic Association following a 63-47 loss at Old Dominion University on Sunday.

James Madison University leads the CAA with a record of 22-2 overall and 13-0 in the conference, and is followed by Old Dominion (15-8 overall, 11-1 in the conference) and UD (20-4 overall, 11-2 in the conference).

“We have some deficiencies that were exposed today,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said following the loss in Norfolk, Va. “They were physical with us and we didn't respond. They played physical defense and normally we are the team that dictates the flow defensively, but that didn't happen today. They did a great job on Tyresa Smith and made sure they always had two or three people on her. ODU dominated our post play today. We had a tough time scoring on the block and against a team like ODU, you have to score down there.”

Smith, a senior, led the Hens with 25 points while senior forward Chrissy Fisher had 14. Junior forward Courtney Irving was the only other UD player to score from the field and had 4 points.

The Fightin' Blue Hens will return to action with a CAA game against the University of North Carolina Wilmington at 7 p.m., Thursday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Hens will then travel to Towson University for a game at 2 p.m., Sunday, before returning home to face James Madison at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22.

The James Madison game will be UD Employees Night at the game, and the athletics department is making 1,000 free tickets available to University employees. The free tickets are now available at the University Bookstore in the Perkins Student Center and the YoUDee Shop in the Trabant University Center. UD employees must show proper identification and there is a limit of four tickets per person.
