UD women’s basketball scores its 20th victory

UD senior guard Alena Koshansky, playing in her hometown, scored 17 points as the Hens defeated host George Mason in Fairfax, Va.

8:10 a.m., Feb. 9, 2007--The University of Delaware women's basketball team won its fourth straight game and its 20th of the season, defeating host George Mason University 76-58 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Thursday night in Fairfax, Va.

With the victory, the Fightin' Blue Hens improved to 20-3 overall and 11-1 in the CAA as they prepare for an important showdown with perennial power Old Dominion University at 1 p.m., Sunday, in Norfolk. The Monarchs are 14-8 overall and 10-1 in the conference, and stand in third place behind the Hens and conference leader James Madison University.

UD got 22 points from senior Tyresa Smith and 17 from point guard Alena Koshansky, who was playing in her hometown. Senior forward Chrissy Fisher scored 11 points, junior guard Kyle DeHaven had seven assists and junior forward Courtney Irving had nine rebounds.

The Hens jumped out to a 6-0 lead on three-point baskets by Koshansky and Fisher and did not allow George Mason to score until the 16:10 mark. UD took a 34-20 lead into halftime and never led by fewer than 12 points the rest of the way.

“I'm very happy for this team to reach the goal of a 20-win season,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “We set the tone defensively early once again and that was the main key to the win. This is Alena's hometown and every time she comes home she refuses to lose. I'm happy for her.”
