UD women’s basketball tops VCU in CAA play

UD junior guard Kyle DeHaven scored 19 points in the victory over Virginia Commonwealth.

9:16 a.m., Feb. 2, 2007--Posting its largest margin of victory in a road game in eight seasons, the University of Delaware women's basketball team handily defeated host Virginia Commonwealth University 82-51 in a Colonial Athletic Association game played Thursday night in Richmond.

“We played very well tonight,” UD Head Coach Tina Martin said. “Our ball pressure was back and we created a lot of problems for their offense. I thought our defensive intensity was outstanding. We really took it to them. Our team is looking for each other again on offense and that's a great thing. When we do that, we can score a lot of points. The bottom line is that we have the opportunity to do some good things toward the end of the season. If we play the way we are capable, we will be a tough team to beat.”

After an early Virginia Commonwealth lead at 9-6, the Fightin' Blue Hens went on a 23-4 run. The Hens led 38-31 at the break and then held Virginia Commonwealth to just 20 points in the second half.

Senior guard Tyresa Smith led the Hens with 23 points and nine rebounds, and junior guard Kyle DeHaven added 19 points and four steals. Senior point guard Alena Koshansky had eight points and five steals and junior forward Courtney Irving had eight points.

With the victory, UD improved to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in the CAA. The Hens are in second place in the conference behind James Madison University, which is 18-2 overall and 10-0 in the conference with recent victories over UD and perennial power Old Dominion University. The win over the Hens lifted James Madison to No. 25 in the national polls.

UD will return home for a conference game against Georgia State University at 1 p.m., Sunday, at the Bob Carpenter Center. The Hens will then play at George Mason on Feb. 8 and at Old Dominion on Feb. 11.

In the victory over Virginia Commonwealth, UD recorded its largest winning margin on the road in conference play since joining the CAA in 2001-02 and its largest winning margin in any road game since the Hens defeated Lafayette 86-50 on Nov. 29, 1999.
