Young, Marquez excel at Fasttrack Invitational

Cristine Marquez set a UD record in the 400-meter dash, covering the distance in 56.33 to finish third at the Fasttrack Invitational in New York.

8:09 a.m., Feb. 26, 2007--Rachel Young won the shot put and Cristine Marquez set a school record in the 400-meter dash at the University of Delaware indoor track and field teams competed at the New York University Fasttrack Invitational held Friday night at the New York City Armory.

Young posted her sixth individual championship of the season and 18th of her career as she threw the shot put 45 feet, 9.75 inches. Marquez ran the 400 in 56.33, breaking the previous UD record of 56.83 set by Tyechia Smith in 2004.

Also for the UD women, Amanda Marshall was second in the weight throw (52 feet, 3.75 inches) and fourth in the shot put (44 feet), Michelle Gomes was second in the 200-meter dash with a career best time of 24.62, Alexi Capsouras was second in the 60-meter hurdles with a career best time of 9.03, Kelli McDonald was second in the pole vault (11 feet, 9.75 inches), and the 4x800-meter relay team of Christina Antonopoulos, Kellyn Wright, Laura Heenan, and Yianna Antonopoulos was third (9:29. 77).

In men's competition, UD's Kyle Schmid finished second in the 5,000-meter run with a career best time of 14:55.12.

Conrad Rapp was third in the pole vault (14 feet, 9 inches), Gregg Cantwell was third in the 3,000-meter run with a career best time of 8:28.11, and Matt Guida was fifth in the pole vault (14 feet, 3.25 inches).
