Women’s indoor track wins Thomson Invitational

UD freshman Christine Marquez ran the second fastest 400 and 200 meter times in school history during Saturday’s Thomson Invitational.

8:27 a.m., Feb. 12, 2007--The University of Delaware women's indoor track and field team captured its second team meet championship of the season and the men's team finished third in the Fightin' Blue Hens' annual Thomson Invitational held Saturday at the Delaware Field House.

UD won the Division I women's team title with 141.5 points. Towson University was second with 112 points, followed by the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Temple University, Coppin State University, Howard University, Delaware State University, Villanova University, the University of Maryland and LaSalle University in the 10-team field. Salisbury University won the Division II-III team title with 108 points.

Winning events for the UD women's team were Kelli McDonald in the pole vault (11 feet, 10 inch), Kellyn Wright in the 800 meters (2:21.47) and Cristine Marquez in the 400 meters (57.93). McDonald posted the second best pole vault height in school history and won her third meet title of the season. Marquez posted the second best 400 meter time in school history and also the second best 200 meter time in UD history (25.56) with a third place finish.

Also for the Hens, Annie Kowtoniuk was second in the 3,000 meters (11:22.07), Christina Antonopoulos was second in the mile (5:12.88), Annie Fulton was third in the triple jump (33-10), Laura Chirico was third in the pole vault (10-6), Brooke Maguire was third in the 5,000 meters (19:13.61), and Stefanie LaFergola was third in the 3,000 meters (11:23.58).

Delaware State won the men's team title with 134 points, followed by Maryland Eastern Shore, Delaware (124 points), Temple, Villanova, Howard and Maryland in the seven-team field. Salisbury won the men's Division II-III team title.

UD got first place finishes from Conrad Rapp in the pole vault (14-9) and Gregg Cantwell in the 5,000 meters (15:04.82).

Also for the Hens, Matt Guida was second in the pole vault (14-3.25), Mike Roth was second in the 1,000 meters (2:36.72), Jared Wasser was third in the shot put (50-5.5), Kevin Kemmerle was third in the 5,000 meters (16:37.91), Tyler Mayforth was third in the 3,000 meters (8:53.18) and Matt Gray was third in the 1,000 meters (2:40.60).
