Delaware track teams have strong weekend

9:17 a.m., Feb. 5, 2007--University of Delaware track and field athletes posted six all-time top 10 times this weekend as the Fightin' Blue Hens competed at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational at the New York City Armory.

The meet featured some of the top teams in the country, including the University of Florida, Florida State University, Louisiana State University and the University of Arkansas.

UD athletes collected four top 10 finishes in the meet as Kyle Schmid was fifth in the men's 5,000 meters (14:56.94), the women's 4x800 meter relay team of Laura Heenan, Christina Antonopoulos, Yianna Antonopoulos and Megan McGrath was eighth (9:26.98), Kelli McDonald was eighth in the women's pole vault (11 feet, 3.75 inches), and the 4x400 meter relay team of Daniella Price, Brittany Wright, Alexi Capsouras and Cristine Marquez was ninth (3:51.61).

The women's 4x400 meter relay team registered the second fastest time in school history while Schmid's time in the 5,000 meters ranks No. 8 all-time at UD.

Also for the Hens, Marquez finished 35th in the women's 400 meters with the second best time in school history (57.41) and Price finished 32nd in the 60 meters, also with the second fastest time in UD history (7.76). Kellyn Wright finished 20th in the women's 800 meters with the fifth best time in UD history (2:18.20), and Gregg Cantwell finished 30th in the 3,000 meters with the 10th best time in school history (8:37.37).

Other Delaware top 25 finishes were Mike Zeberkiewicz, 19th in the 800 meters (1:55.95); Christina Antonopoulos, 20th in the mile (5:10.86); Yianna Antonopoulos, 21st in the mile mile (5:11.74); Rachel Young, 21st in the shot put (44-4.25); and Jared Wasser, 22nd in the men's shot put (51-9.75).

Competing in Saturday's Frank Coldren Invitational Track and Field Meet hosted by Ursinus College Saturday afternoon at Bakes Field House, five UD athletes won their events.

Young won her 17th career meet title as she captured the shot put with a toss of 43-11.75 while McDonald captured her fourth career meet title in the pole vault with a leap of 11-5.75.

Also for the UD women's team, Amanda Marshall was second in the shot put (42-2), Annie Fulton was sixth in the triple jump (33-4.5) and 10th in the triple jump (15-0), and Stephanie Taylor was seventh in the 800 meters (2:29.81).

Tim Brock was the lone double winner for the Hens as he won the 800 meters (2:00) and was part of the 4x400 meter relay team, along with Nick Morrissey, Alex Tingue and Steven Jackson, that won in a time of 3:32.18. Brandson Swartout won the men's long jump with a leap of 21-4.75.

Also for the UD men's team, Kyle Nagy was second in the 200 meters (23.19), Conrad Rapp was third in the shot put (14-5.25), Mike Roth was third in the mile (4:30.93), Doug Alpers was fourth in the shot put (47-3), Tyler Mayforth was fourth in the mile (4:31.85), Alex Gambogi was sixth in the mile (43:33.34), and Matt Arbaugh was sixth in the pole vault (13-11.25).
