UD to host hospitality entrepreneurship summit

4:51 p.m., Feb. 7, 2007--UD's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management will host the Darden Restaurants Foundation entrepreneurship summit from Saturday-Sunday, March 3-4, at the Courtyard Marriott-University of Delaware.

The event, which is funded by a $100,000 grant from the Darden Restaurants Foundation, is intended to interest students from underrepresented groups in establishing businesses and/or franchises in the hospitality and tourism industry. Invited participants include business and hospitality students from nine Mid-Atlantic historically black colleges and universities, students from local high schools and UD students.

According to Fred DeMicco, ARAMARK Chair and chairperson in UD's Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management, there is an increasing desire among firms in the hospitality industry to attract minorities and other underrepresented people as owners and franchisees. “This summit will present the world of ownership opportunity to students at the University of Delaware and other schools,” he said.

The grant from the Darden Restaurants Foundation will provide general support for the event and fund HRIM graduate students working with faculty on various research and service projects, including the Entrepreneurship Summit.

With headquarters in Orlando, Fla., Darden Restaurants Inc. owns and operates more than 1,400 Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Bahama Breeze, Smokey Bones and Seasons 52 restaurants with annual sales of $5.7 billion.
