Coastal storms focus of March 8 workshop

1:37 p.m., Feb. 26, 2007--Coastal storms in Delaware will be the featured topic of a special workshop to be held from 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m., Thursday, March 8, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. The workshop, planned in observation of the 45th anniversary of the devastating storm that struck the coast in March 1962, is sponsored by the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), the Delaware Sea Grant College Program and the City of Rehoboth Beach.

The March 8 workshop will include a 9 a.m. screening of the video “The '62 Storm-A Shared Response,” funded by the Delaware Humanities Forum and DNREC and produced by Anew Inc., of Wilmington. The video features firsthand accounts from people who lived through the damaging three-day northeaster, often called “Delaware's Coastal Storm of the Century,” that claimed lives, homes and property along the coastline throughout the Mid-Atlantic.

Featured speakers at the workshop include nationally known severe weather experts who will provide information about coastal storms that affect Delaware's coast. At 10:30 a.m., Paul Kocin, winter weather/severe storm expert formerly with The Weather Channel, will speak about northeasters. Kocin has co-authored books on Atlantic seaboard winter storms and northeasters and is often contacted by the press for his expert comment on upcoming storms.

Joe Miketta, meteorologist with NOAA's National Weather Service office in Mt. Holly, N.J., will give a presentation on hurricanes at 11:15 a.m.

The workshop will conclude with an overview of coastal storm impacts on Delaware's shoreline presented by Anthony Pratt, administrator of DNREC's Shoreline and Waterway Management Section. Light refreshments will be served; informational handouts on topics related to coastal hazard awareness and preparedness will be available.

While the workshop is free, seating is limited and reservations are required. To reserve a space, contact Rita Baty at (302) 645-4346 or register online at [www.ocean.udel.edu/public/62stormregistration.html].
