Talk on lagging U.S. science funding set Wednesday 2:22 p.m., Feb. 20, 2007--UD's Department of Physics and Astronomy is holding a collioquium on U.S. physical science funding policy at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21, in 104 Gore Hall. The speaker is Steve Pierson, in charge of government relations for the American Physical Society (APS), who will speak on “China and India: A New Sputnik? Federal Funding for Physical Sciences Research.” Pierson will address the Washington environment for basic research funding, challenges to U.S. science leadership and APS efforts to increase science research budgets, which have been stagnant for nearly 30 years, while countries like China and India have steadily improved their science and technology infrastructure. He also will discuss how the United States is losing high-tech market share and jobs, and that many believe that these challenges require an infusion of funding for research from the U.S. government like that undertaken after the launch of Sputnik in 1957 by the Soviet Union. |
